Jury Duty Volunteers

Dear CT Jury Administration,

I am writing to suggest you accept volunteers for jury duty.

The current policy for jury selection uses a random process from a Master File consisting of names and addresses that Jury Administration receives every year from four sources: Department of Motor Vehicles by way of CT drivers licenses; Department of Revenue Services by way of state personal income tax filings; Registrars of voters from the state’s cities and towns; Department of Labor by way of persons who received unemployment compensation benefits.

Please reconsider this policy. Let’s be realistic here. When people are working or going to school, they will do whatever they can to avoid jury duty. Getting disqualified for a case is a fine art to those who value their education and/or career. However, when the economy crashes and people are unemployed, there is free time to serve their community. Obviously, volunteers would not choose specific cases, but perhaps the unemployed could be noted and bumped to be far more likely to be called upon.

Just a suggestion.
